Buying a riding hat: fit comes first

What to bring to a fitting, why size alone is not enough and where to check competition requirements.

Book a fitting with a trained hat fitter rather than choosing from a head measurement alone. The BHS recommends a reputable tack shop with a fitter who has appropriate BETA training.

Before your appointment

Tell the fitter what riding you do and which organisation's rules apply. Bring the current event or assessment requirements, rather than relying on a product listing that says the hat is suitable for competition.

Fit, condition and rules are separate checks

The BHS hat guidance explains that head shapes differ and advises against second-hand hats because damage can be invisible. It also recommends replacement after a fall, particularly when the hat contacts the ground.

Ask the fitter to show you how to adjust and fasten the harness. Keep the manufacturer's care and replacement instructions. For competitions, check the relevant body's current rulebook; a good fit alone doesn't establish eligibility.
